Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Maybe we could put your tape back on

Rewind until the moment we went wrong

I was always just a little bit lost

Knowing what I do, I should have fought

[Chorus]

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

[Verse 2]

Simple words connecting thought

Just pieces of the background 'til they're gone, gone, gone

I was only there to sing your song

What were you protecting yourself from?

[Chorus]

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

[Bridge]

Where went all the takers, baby?

Could you still give what they want?

Where went all the takers, baby?

Do you still have what they want?

[Chorus]

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

You don't get to walk away, walk away now

It's too late, you can't walk away, walk away now

Recording Details

Writing for the follow-up album to 2007's Chase This Light began after touring of the US[1], Europe[2], and Japan[3] followed by a co-headlining US tour with Paramore [4]. In 2008-06 bassist Rick Burch said they were working several new ideas but had "no plans to work with a well known producer on the record, but...that could change."[5] Around this time Jim Adkins, the band’s primary lyricist, reused an exercise he had used as the band was putting the finishing touches on Chase This Light. He would look at photographs and coming up with his own back stories for them. Adkins had recently discovered two books Cindy Sherman's “Completely Untitled Film Still” series and Hannah Starkey’s “Photographs 1997-2007” and became taken with the creation of his own back stories for each photo. “I would take about 10-15 minutes and blast through every aspect of the scene that came to me. Who was this particular character and who were the people in her life? How did she end up in this scene?” Adkins says, “It was intended to be a writing exercise -- much like an exercise lots of people employ every day called ‘object writing.’ The point wasn’t to get material for Jimmy Eat World songs, it was only to get my brain in a mindset for working. Eventually, though, ideas developed in those sessions did start creeping into songs. The album title ‘Invented’ refers to a song which I feel sums up the mood here,” Adkins adds, “but could also be taken more literally as this album is the deepest into character writing we have tried so far" [6]. Adkins said that "Later on in the day I would be working on my own songs, and some of the more interesting parts of those writing sessions started creeping in; enough of those ideas became what the other guys were excited about too" They estimated that about 85%-90% of the record was generated this way [7][8]

In 2008-08, drummer Zach Lind said the band were expected to be working on the new album imminently [9]. While working on the new material, the band embarked upon a ten-year anniversary tour for Clarity. Adkins said the trek had no influence on the forthcoming material but acted as "an overall confidence booster because it's kind of an amazing that ten years on people still like records we made in the '90s." [8] When making demos for their next album, guitarist Tom Linton said they purposely wanted to take a more stripped down approach, compared to the heavily-produced nature of Chase This Light, saying "we thought we might have gone a little bit too crazy on some of the production parts, like as far as adding more vocals and keyboard parts. So this time, we went with something more stripped down." [10].

While on the anniversary tour, the band became reacquainted with Clarity producer Mark Trombino, and decided to work with him once again for their forthcoming album. The band subsequently began recording tracks at their home studio and rehearsal space, Unit 2 in Tempe, Arizona. They would then send them to Trombino, who was located in California. Jim said it "had been a really long time since we had met. We talked for a while and it was good. We had already been working on material for Invented for a while, and we were thinking of hiring a producer to work with us, but we wanted someone with a specific skill set and willingness to work in a non-conventional setting.” The idea was the band would work out a song as much as they could on their own in their studio, Unit 2 in Tempe, Arizona and then send the multi-track recordings to Trombino in California. “Mark is a ninja with a computer,” Adkins adds, “After trying out a couple songs we knew he brought something really complimentary to the sessions. We would be recording the foundations of one song in Arizona as he was mixing another song in California.” [6]

Adkins remarked that Trombino would make a "mix of it and add production ideas and we would just kind of go back and forth like that." "Mark is the wizard at computers, and the history that we have working with him we don't have with anybody else, so it made sense on the familiarity level and the ease of working level." [8] [11] Although the band and Trombino spent little time together in the studio, Trombino joined Jimmy Eat World on a couple of occasions [12]. Regarding the overall recording process with Mark, Adkins stated: "It frees up a lot of our geographic restrictions for both the producer and the band; it's not just someone next door." [13]

The strings for Heart Is Hard to Find" and Littlething were recorded by Wesley Seidmanat Capitol Studios, assisted by Paul Smith and were arranged and conducted by David Campbell. They consist of violinists Josephina Vergara, Gerardo Hilara, Tammy Hatwanand Michele Richards, and celloist Steve Richards [11]. Invented was released on 2010-09-28, through DGC and Interscope Records [11]

Reception

This Song Didn't Chart

Each, song on the album its own "closed narrative" [8] Adkins remarks that the album's title Invented referred to a track that he felt "sums up the mood here, but could also be taken more literally as this album is the deepest into character writing we have tried so far." [6]. The closing track Mixtape was six-and-a-half minutes long and featured piano and "inescapable bass lines swallowed by impactful percussion that are engulfed by storm clouds of dynamic guitar work and melody." [14] [15] Mixtape serves as an "address to an ex-lover in which the narrator rewinds the end of their relationship like a cassette tape so that “you don’t get to walk away now”—skips and sputters with a electronic drum click keeping oddly-paced time in the background before crawling its way towards an extended outro laced with horns and heavily processed vocal signs." [16] [17] The band noted that this album's song sequencing was not given a much though as previous albums as it "...isn’t as important as it used to be. People listen to individual tracks these days. It used to be that you would sequence the songs for an entire listening experience." [18] However Mixtape is considered a traditionally massive closer for the band. [19]

Speaking exclusively to Gigwise, bassist Rick Burch revealed that the band plan to head back into their very own home studio to start recording new material as soon as possible. You might also like... Jimmy Eat World on new album, Kelly Clarkson & Steve Jobs Jimmy Eat World Announce November UK Tour “We’re kind of feeling like we have a lot of ideas brewed up and we’re going to get cracking on some new music. Actually we have our own home studio that we recorded 'Chase this Light' in. So it’s really convenient,” he said. “So far, we’re having the attitude of just doing it. And not having the attitude of trying to do anything, and just ‘Let It Happen’. With our other records, sometimes Jim will have a lyric melody or a guitar melody and we’ll build from that. Sometimes we just sit around and make noise and go from there.” Burch said that the band hoped to step out of their current three year album cycle. “We’re trying our best to break that and cut the time down – and at least cut a year off of that. That’s our goal. We want to be able to have stuff out there sooner.” Jimmy Eat World's bassist said that the group currently has no plans to work with a well known producer on the record, but, he added, that could change. “It’s always when you’re doing these songs and they’re coming together that names come to mind, and you think 'God, it would be great to get this person working on this song' and something like that might happen so we’re not counting that out,” he added. Speaking to Gigwise at the Download festival, Burch said that the band were considering self releasing when their Interscope contract comes to a close, possibly following in the footsteps of Nine Inch Nails. “It’s something we won’t count out. We have one more album to do on our current label, and after that I think we’re free agents. We’ll see what happens then,” Buch said.,

I know you were inspired by some photographs and objective writing. Can you talk about what that process was like? Maybe like three years ago I was trying different things to get my brain moving in a mindset for work. It wasnt necessarily to get material for songs, it was just really to get the synapse of songwriting. One of the things I was trying to do is I would flip through random pictures by Hannah Starkey and Cindy Sherman. The work I was using is really composed. Theres a story there. Its not like this photojournalistic grab kind of thing, theres a story there. Even if you werent coming at it from a writers perspective, youd start asking yourself questions about it. Who are these people? Whats happening here? I would take 10-15 minutes and try to freewrite and think about every aspect of who the character is and what kind of decisions theyre making. Every aspect that came to mind, I would just write it down. Then later in the day I would be working on music and some of the more interesting ideas from those sessions would find their way into song ideas. It ends up that maybe 85-90% of the record is based off of those types of sessions.,

I think the main thing is when we began writing and doing demos for this record we wanted to make it a little less produced than Chase This Light. We were really happy with Chase This Light, but on some of the songs we thought we might have gone a little bit too crazy on some of the production parts, like as far as adding more vocals and keyboard parts. So this time, we went with something more stripped down.,

With computers it's really just an exercise in restraint on when things are done. And you can live with it for a little while, too. If it's all in the box there's no worry about charting out all your gear and making sure you have perfect recall on everything. It is the same.
